“David Bowie’s three-song set at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom didn’t draw a lot of attention back in November 2006. He played as part of Keep a Child Alive’s annual Black Ball fundraiser, along with Alicia Keys, Damian Marley and comedian Wanda Sykes, breaking out “Wild Is the Wind,” “Fantastic Voyage” and “Changes,” which he sang as a duet with Keys. Nobody had even the faintest idea it would be his last public performance before his grand disappearing act.

MUST: classic , self-titled, debut LP.

CHIC:::::[YES] Top of the genre. Disco. Not just hits, but anthems. Nile Rogers (guitar)/Bernard Edwards (bass), one of pop music’s great songwriting teams. See MusicNotes: “Get Lucky”, Pharrell Williams . A rare distinction for CHIC – a disco supergroup.

CHICAGO::::[YES] Game changers. Horns sections powering a rock group. Great singing, brass, percussion and songwriting. Styles? Teary-eyed ballads, guitar rock, jazz, power ballads and latin sounds and many extended jams . Three greatest hit albums filled with memorable radio hits, as the group evolved!

CHEAP TRICK:::::  Great hit records. MUST: Live in Budokan.

DEEP PURPLE::::: Great hit records. MUST: Machine Head including the great, “Smoke on the Water”.

JANET JACKSON::::: [YES] Hit making machine. With production help from Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and trend-setting style and sound. Soon, she was not riding (the greatest superstar of  the 80’s) Michael’s coat-tails and unaffected by his controversies. Her “wardrobe malfunction” at 2005 Super Bowl was a sensation. From the 1980’s and 90’s [female solo] , she may be second to only… Madonna.    MUST: “Control”, LP.

THE JB’s::::: [YES] A musician’s choice. More than James Brown’s back-up band, more than Parliament / Funkadelic . The original funk “orchestra”.

LOS LOBOS:::::: Breakthrough in the “La Bamba” soundtrack.
MUST: “How will the wolf survive”, LP.

STEVE MILLER::::::[YES] Two dozen great hit records. Ruled the 70’s radio with albums high-lighted by great songs. Early work with Les Paul and Paul McCartney. Boz Scaggs in his band. Late career, blues work.

NINE INCH NAILS:::: Ground breaking. Trent Reznor, a unique talent, songwriting and led the industrial metallic sound that U2 and David Bowie emulated.

N.W.A. ::::::NEXT. All-Star team of Hip Hop. Revolutionaries that led hip hop from the streets to the radio. Film “Straight Outta Compton” (2015). Superstars of the genre: Easy-E. Ice Cube. Dr Dre.

THE SMITHS::::::: Soulful. Sad. Morrissey and Johnny Marr’s greatest song “How Soon Is Now” is a psychedelic classic in the New Wave era.

THE SPINNERS:::::: NEXT. A great vocal group that got better with Thom Bell’s production at Atlantic Records. Almost 2 dozen R&B radio classics.

YES::::::: “No”:::::Progressive rock in the 1970’s became accessible with great songs. Yes wrote those songs. Led by keyboard wizard, Rick Wakemen, Jon Anderson, Steve Howe and Chris Squire. (Asia , Buggles. Lengthy list of session work for Bowie, Elton…)

Looking back was 1986 the best year in Boston sports?    ESPN.com (below)

Best year: 1986

As you can tell by that overall winning percentage, Boston sports teams have been very successful over the past quarter-century. Sometimes this is forgotten with that constant reminders of 1918.

Anyway, 1986 was quite a year — the Celtics beat the Lakers in the NBA Finals. The Red Sox, umm, nearly won the World Series. The Patriots played in the Super Bowl early in the year and then made the playoffs again in the 1986 season. The Bruins made the playoffs as well.
