Pharrell appeared on mega-hit, “Blurred Lines” [2013] by Robin Thicke.

On June 29th 2013, Pharrell became the 12th artist to simultaneously appear on both the #1 and #2 hits, on the Billboard singles chart.

 

 

Nile Rodgers , co-wrote and played guitar on “Get Lucky”.

Along with Bernard Edwards (bass), Nile Rodgers defined an elegant disco sound in their band called, Chic. Chic has a half-dozen classic disco anthems and collaborations with Rogers and Edwards …and drummer Tony Thompson.

In 1985′, Thompson appeared with the Live-Aid, Led Zeppelin reunion. {note: John Bonham (age 32)  passed away in 1980.

Rodgers appeared at 1985’s Live-Aid with the Thompson Twins.

Edwards (bass) played with Thompson (drums) in 1985’s supergroup, The Power Station. Robert Palmer, lead singer.

Chic was the studio band for Sister Sledge, including “We Are Family” and “He’s The Greatest Dancer”.

Diana Ross’ 1980 hits, “I’m Coming Out” and “Upside Down”[album: Diana] . Recall Thompson’s classic drum intro in “ I’m Coming Out”.

Nile Rodgers (co-produced, guitar) appears on the 1984 supergroup, the Honeydrippers with Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and Paul Shaffer. The EP yielded the gems, “Sea Of Love” and “Rockin at Midnight”.
‘”Good Times” by Chic was sampled in the first hip-hop chart success “Rapper’s Delight” by the Sugarhill Gang in 1979.

Similar bassline used in “Another One Bites the Dust” by Queen and “Rapture” by Blondie and sampled in hundreds of other songs!
The Bad News: 1996, Bernard Edwards died of pneumonia. 2003. Tony Thompson died of kidney cancer. In 2011, Nile Rodgers is battling prostate cancer.

2014 Grammy Awards Update

And the 2014 Grammy Award goes to…. Robots? Pharrell Williams, producer & singer, was very busy.

After working with Daft Punk in 2013, Daft Punk got 5 Grammy nominations and 5 wins, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year (if this was golf, these are 2 majors).

Best Dance/Electronica Album [2]

Best Engineered Album-Non-Classical [3] .

“Get Lucky” also won for Record of the Year[4]

Best Pop Duo/Group Performance[5].
Personally, Pharrell was nominated 7 times with various projects:

[One] Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City (5 nominations for their 2013 album led by rapper, Kendrick Lemar.

[Two] Daft Punk.

[Three] Robin Thicke & T.I. “Blurred Lines” (Billboard’s “Song Of the Summer and 12 weeks at #1, 2 Grammy nominations but zero wins).

Also, Pharrell was won “Producer Of The Year”. ( another major award)
In a rare coincidence, Pharrell was nominated twice – for two different projects (Album of the Year: 2 were Pharrell projects of the 5 nominated albums. “Best Pop Duo Performance”: “Blurred Lines” vs “Get Lucky” vs 3 other songs).
